In addition to serving as auxiliary equipment for grinding by performing pre-classification and check-classification, spiral classifiers are occasionally used for washing clay-bearing ores, as well as desliming and dewatering ore slurries. For example, in gold ore processing, most gold ores contain impurities and require beneficiation. Classification is a critical step in this process. Typically, spiral classifiers are used in conjunction with ball mills.

In gold ore processing, the ground ore slurry is fed into the water tank through a feed inlet located in the middle of the settling zone. Below the inclined water tank lies the classification and settling zone for the ore slurry. The spiral rotates at a low speed, agitating the slurry to suspend fine particles, which flow over the overflow weir. Coarse particles settle to the tank bottom and are transported by the spiral to the discharge outlet as return sand.
